Slacks Creek, Queensland families are now able to take advantage of a new sense-based learning and play centre that has opened at nearby Marsden Library.
The establishment of the new area was undertaken by Logan City Council to coincide with International Day of People with Disability in December.
Councillor Russell Lutton, Chair of Sports and Community Services, said the new facility featured digital, light, sound, tactile, and play-based equipment, which could assist users in developing fine motor and language skills.
Signs in the library point those interested in taking part to the designated sensory play area, which has been developed to make parents and children feel relaxed while learning and playing along at the same time.
Cr. Lutton said traditional learning environments like classrooms did not always suit everyone, and the new facility was all about providing viable options and alternatives.
He said libraries enjoyed a long history of initiating innovative programmes for everyone from the very young to the senior years that gave them an opportunity to learn and achieve to the best of their ability.
Industry specialists helped to make the new space a reality, along with funding from Logan City Council and the Vision 2017 State Library of Queensland grant programme.
The equipment is free to use for children aged 0-12 and their parents at any time during library hours, while bookings are necessary for childcare centres, schools, play groups and others. Flyers will advise of Sensory Space events as they arise.
