Medical services available at school in Slacks Creek

Students at a high school in Slacks Creek can now access medical services during their lunch break.

The Mabel Park State High School has begun the project which gives students the opportunity to see a GP at the school each week. The school project runs in partnership with the University of Queensland (UQ) Health Care.

School principal Mick Hornby said that access to a weekly doctor had made a huge difference to the behaviour and learning capacity of his students. He further commented that children who had difficulties at school, quite often had underlying medical issues that once treated, markedly improved their academic outcomes.

Parents can book appointments through UQ Health Care’s online portal, with the majority of appointments being made after classes. Information may be available for interested parents with printing services able to produce educational Brochures and Flyers on initiatives like this.

Hornby also said that some of his students were missing out on vital health care for a wide range of reasons, and the school project aimed to fill in the gap where possible. A specially-built room at the school allows the students to see a doctor without the need for parents to take time off work or arrange transport.

There is no cost payable by either the students or the school, as all appointments are billed directly through Medicare.
