A new suburb has emerged within the boundaries of Logan City Council.
The township of Kairabah – pronounced care-a-bar – has joined the more established areas of the city, such as Loganholme and Slacks Creek, Queensland.
Boundary changes in Yarrabilba were responsible for Kairabah’s establishment as Logan’s 64th suburb. Its name was derived from the Yugambeh language and means place of the white cockatoo.
The new suburb was expected to support future population growth in the area, according to Logan Mayor Pam Parker.
Located in the state’s southeast growth corridor between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, the City of Logan has seen substantial population growth of about 2.2 per cent a year. Resident numbers have surpassed 300,000 and, by 2031, the city is expected to be home to almost 500,000 people.
The creation of a new city was a joint effort, according to Mayor Parker, who said consultation had taken place between Natural Resources and Mines representatives Lend Lease, the Council and local community members.
The name Kairabah had been put forward by the Yugambeh Centre.
The new suburb is expected to take shape during the next 10 years, according to Division 4 councillor Don Petersen. He said its establishment was an important step towards meeting community needs and managing population growth throughout the community.
Future flyer printing inviting residents to have their say is also expected for new suburbs mooted for creation in the city’s Greater Flagstone area.
