Logan leads nation for drone delivery

A total of 19 suburbs in the Logan area, including Slacks Creek, have combined to record the second highest rate of drone delivery in Australia.

Drone delivery commenced in the area in 2019, when Marsden and Crestmead were nominated as pilot locations for Wing, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, and has since expanded. Customers can order groceries, household items and take-away food online with delivery via a package that is lowered by cable from a drone that flies to the customer address.

The drones, with a wingspan of 1.5 metres, can carry packages up to 1.5 kilograms at a speed of more than 110 kilometres per hour. Initial issues with overhead noise were addressed through redesign of the drone craft, with the company now pegging the noise level at around 40 decibels – about half the noise level of a lawnmower.

Along with more than 10,000 cups of coffee and 1,200 barbecue chickens, Wing has delivered more than 250 Easter treats and 500 Ekka-related orders to the Logan area – including showbags, dagwood dogs and fairy floss – as community celebrations were disrupted or cancelled due to the pandemic. It also commenced delivery to workplaces. Flyer printing can be an effective way to let local communities know about exciting new service and delivery options like this.

Wing spokesman Jesse Suskin said that the company’s plans for the future, along with focusing on service, include enhancing its merchant and product offerings and expanding beyond Logan.

The Logan area has recorded 50,000 drone deliveries to date in 2021.
