Logan drivers will need to be a little more alert when driving through a few traffic hotspots, after speed limits were reduced on seven major roads.
Based on professional advice from traffic engineering consultant Point 8, the Logan City Council has decided to make some adjustments to speed limits on a few major thoroughfares in the city. Although speed limits have become more relaxed on three roads in the city, stricter limits are being imposed on seven others, including Loganlea Road in Slacks Creek and Stockleigh Road in South Maclean.
According to figures from the Department of Transport, Logan drivers are among the worst offenders in terms of driving over the speed limit within school zones. In 2016 – 2017, over a thousand fines had to be issued drivers for this reason in both Logan Central and Springwood school zones.
Educational road safety campaigns which involve poster printing and display at eye-catching locations are often carried out to remind the public on their responsibility of playing their part in road safety. However, such mild educational methods often do not suffice, thus requiring the intervention of more drastic rules and regulations to protect all road users from preventable mishaps.
At a recent council meeting, some attendees called for increased signage to raise awareness of speed limits, as well as the introduction of police cameras.
