Focusing on the next decade, the Climate Change Resilience Strategy 2021-2031 represents the vision of the council in its efforts to create a green and carbon neutral region.
Mayor of Logan Darren Power said it was important to make people within the community more aware of any consequences that could arise due to changes in sea level, rainfall, temperature and extreme weather occurrences, adding:
“It is not unreasonable to expect that a variable and changing climate could result in more frequent, and more severe, floods, droughts, heatwaves and bushfires in our city.”
The mayor said that according to mapping, almost half of Logan City is within areas that are bushfire prone, and this could be expanded if drier conditions prevail.
Community consultation on the new strategy is scheduled to begin soon, and this will give everyone a chance to comment. Printing services are often employed to ensure the full details are available in hard copy for those participating in strategies like this.
Future decision making by the council will also pay attention to and consider any possible impacts of climate change on proposals. This will make the strategy a “greenprint” for planning over the long term.
Buildings owned by the council have already been subject to the benefits of renewable energy following the installation of greater than 1000kw photovoltaic panels.
