Innovative grab rails lead the way in Slacks Creek

When catalogue printing time comes around for Queensland company Bendtech, it will have some market-leading new products in its inventory. Bendtech's Slacks Creek factory is engaged in manufacturing medical-standard grab rails which enable the infirm and the elderly to find their way around their homes.

Some of the more innovative designs in the Bendtech range include an oval grab rail, which is more easily held by feeble hands than the conventional designs, and a rail that glows in the dark. The grab rails are one of the main products of the company's local plant. The firm also has factories in China.

Bendtech also manufactures goods which are in demand from solar hot water companies and mining firms. These items are made in their two factories in China which employ 30 workers. The Slacks Creek factory employs over 20 people. According to Bendtech's managing director Tim Shalders, the company is obliged to open offshore facilities because many competing firms have factories in China.

The standards to which grab rails are manufactured vary between countries. Shalders explained:

"The American market for example is huge in ageing but they're a very simplistic market and don't use the standards we use. The British market also uses different sizes and types of rails."

At its local plant, Bendtech is improving and refining its products. The grab rails must conform to the standards of the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Mr Shalders said that registration with the ARTG helps to keep manufacturing standards high.
