Hospital bed lifts quality of life for Slacks Creek family

While brochure printers and door-to-door collections may play invaluable roles in attracting support for a charity, the value of a ‘good news’ story can certainly help too. A story from last month surely warmed many a heart, and prompted local companies to consider supporting their community charities.

Lita Lilo of Slacks Creek was the grateful recipient of an automatic hospital bed for her 91-year-old mother who has been bedridden for 17 years. The bed was donated by members of the Mount Gravatt and Rochedale/Springwood Lions Clubs. Lilo, whose mother is a paraplegic, said:

"I am really pleased the bed is here, because it is going to help my mum. With this new bed, she will be able to sit up and we will be able to care for her better."

Lilo phoned Anglicare Southern Queensland to tell them about her mother’s plight, and they asked the Rochedale/Springwood Lions for help with buying a bed. Keith Yule, the President of the Lions, contacted Apple Maq, a charity specialising in distributing second-hand hospital beds where needed. With the help of Mount Gravatt Lions, Yule was able to tell Lilo that her mother’s bed was on its way.

Yule said:

"Not many people know what we as a club do, but this is exactly the sort of thing that drives us.”

Moving the bed to Lilo’s home was facilitated by Meyers Removals, and the bed was assembled by volunteers after delivery. Anglicare Southern Queensland has many sponsors including retailers, banks, and builders who give financial support, as well as free goods and services.
