Five more sites in Logan City to be powered by solar energy

More public buildings in the Logan City area are to have solar panels installed on their rooftops.

Council has advised there will be at least five more public buildings that are to have solar panels installed on their roofs during this financial year.

Currently the area has 29 solar systems established on buildings throughout the city, which helps to keep energy costs and emissions low. Many of these are small scale systems but also include large installations such as the Animal Management Centre in Slacks Creek, which has a 30kw (kilowatt) system on its rooftop.

According to a council media release, the proposed systems will be able to save around $55,200 in annual electricity costs, while at the same time contributing to a sizable reduction in carbon emissions. Flyer printing may be a useful means to circulate information about council initiatives to interested community members.

Solar power generation has become increasingly popular in the Logan City area over the last 10 years, with the region having the advantage of enjoying around 300 sunny days per year. Both private and commercial applications have been embraced, with the Australian PV Institute estimating the total figure of solar installations to be approximately 44,068.

Council has a Carbon Reduction Strategy and Action Plan with a target set to achieve carbon neutrality for all its public operations by 2022.
