Sport will play a major part in bringing together different cultures within Queensland’s Slacks Creek and the greater Logan City Council area.
The initiative will see the council contributing $40,000 into a joint partnership with Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) as part of its Pacific Island Community Engagement Project (PICEP).
According to Logan Mayor Pam Parker, building cohesive and meaningful relationships between the area’s cultural groups and the large number of Pacific Island Communities was more easily achieved through activities such as sport.
She said the project identified the QRU’s ability to deliver a high level of sporting initiatives to entire communities.
Sport was also considered an area of interest that could attract ongoing partnerships between community, business, and government groups.
Parker said the launch of the project this year was an initial trial, but it was hoped it would develop into a regular events programme in years to come.
The trial was welcomed by QRU General Manager Robert Donaghue, who said the 2014 PICEP programmes and events would include the Reclink Rugby Program, Queensland Reds Community Volunteer Education courses, Rookies2Reds School Attendance programme, King and Queens of Pacific Rugby Tournament, and the Logan School 7s Event.
Project planning is still to be finalised, but council marketing strategies such as flyer printing may be carried out to ensure residents are able to access all details of the program.
