Applications invited for environmental projects

Applications opened recently for grants aimed at supporting projects in Slacks Creek and across Logan City that seek to improve the natural environment.

The EnviroGrants programme was introduced by the council to provide support for undertakings that encourage practices that are environmentally sustainable.

Deputy Mayor and Environment Chair Jon Raven said environmental initiatives were strongly supported by the council, and he added:

“Council’s EnviroGrants program is designed to support community-based projects and to encourage those who care about our environment or wildlife, to get their projects off the ground.”

Raven said the area was ecologically diverse and unique, and that people living in the community were keen to be involved in enhancing and preserving the environmental assets. These include the Logan River, which is a natural resource for recreation, leisure, irrigation and drinking, as well as representing a key wildlife corridor from the mountains to the bay.

Brochure printing campaigns have often advertised initiatives that have highlighted the area's environmental diversity.

The grants programme has five categories for which people can apply. They include environmental partnerships, research and surveys, education, on-ground ecosystem restoration and support for individual wildlife carers. Applications will close on March 17.

Until February 21, the City of Logan is also offering residents an opportunity to comment and take part in an Environmental Engagement Survey, in which participants will also be able to suggest future priorities.
