Plates, Blocks and Stones at the Art Gallery of Western Australia

The exhibit Plates, Blocks and Stones: Five Centuries of International Print is now showing at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Perth until November 28, 2011. As the title says it presents prints dating back as far as the 1600s. Many of those who work for printing companies in nearby Bellevue will be interested in learning some of the history behind their profession by visiting this exhibit.

Plates, Blocks and Stones is exhibiting 88 prints from the State Art Collection; the reason for the exhibit is to

"celebrate the art and craft of printmaking."

Among the international artists whose work is displayed in the exhibit are such well-known names as Goya, Kandinsky, Edvard Munch, Kathe Kollwitz, Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, David Hockney and Andy Warhol. The exhibit also features several Japanese colour woodcuts from the 19th century.

All techniques of printmaking are represented at this exhibit highlighting the

"tradition of printmaking practices across the globe."

The exhibit also is partly a time-line of the art which illustrates many changes in direction, the biggest change in direction occurring in the 1960s with artists such as David Hockney and Andy Warhol.

A full-colour illustrated paperback catalogue of the exhibit sells for $9.95.

It is important that we look back at the history of the various arts. Printmaking represented a huge leap in the ability for artists to share their art with more and more people. Current printmakers can learn a lot about their craft by looking to the past.
