Historic photographic technique provides new perspective at Brisbane exhibition

Images of Brisbane landmarks and buildings presented as a product of the ancient photographic technique known as ‘camera obscura’ are the focus of a new exhibition in the city.

Fortitude Valley residents are on the doorstep of the Museum of Brisbane, which will host the 2015 ‘Robyn Stacey: Cloud Land’ exhibition.

In presenting the works, Stacey is emulating a technique used in earlier times by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Aristotle, and Karl Marx.

Stacey, who is among the country’s most acclaimed photographers, explained the old form of image-making operated by permitting light through a small hole to project outside scenes onto inside surfaces.

Known for her images of historical collections, the current exhibition represents a new direction for the artist, and highlights a fascination in exploring the union between science and art through photography.

Stacey’s photographic exhibitions have been featured on brochure printing for major showings around the world since the 1980s. Her most recent exhibitions have been at the Association of International Photography Art Dealers in New York, Australian Centre for Photography and the National Gallery of Australia.

Visitors to the latest exhibition being held at the Museum of Brisbane until April 3, 2016 will be given an opportunity to experience the camera obscura technique first hand, perhaps interesting anyone working for a local graphics or Print company.
