The annual Chinese Moon Festival is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 26 in Fortitude Valley’s Chinatown Mall. Residents are encouraged to get in quick if they wish to book tables at Chinatown’s venues.
The festival is a great success each year, with plenty of cultural acts, roaming entertainment and – everyone’s favourite – dragon and lion dancing. The entertainment is free, and the celebratory atmosphere makes for a great night out for all the family.
The myth of the Moon Festival links the story to Hou Yi, a hero who lived in a time of ten suns. The abundant suns were blamed for many deaths, and so Hou Yi shot nine of these suns out of the sky.
The Chinese Moon Festival is a significant event in the Chinese calendar and occurs on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. The annual occasion is marked by family get-togethers and by eating traditional moon cake under the full moon.
Many Chinese businesses will gift customers with Moon Festival-themed Corporate Gifts during this festival period.
While the full details of the program are yet to be confirmed, the entertainment will begin at 6pm and conclude at 9pm. A variety of venues within Fortitude Valley will be taking part, and the confirmed program will be available on the Brisbane City Council website.
