A Fortitude Valley landmark could soon be redeveloped if the owner’s plans to sell it are successful.
The Tivoli Theatre is a popular live music venue, attracting concert-goers from across Brisbane, but due to a change in family circumstances, the current owners have put the venue up for sale.
Family spokesman John O’Rourke told The Courier Mail newspaper that a recent death, illness and the need to support growing families meant a difficult decision had been made to sell the venue.
The family had been trying to get someone in the music industry to buy the venue during the past few years, but had not been successful, he said.
The building includes an art deco auditorium, which can hold 1,500 people standing or 700 seated.
The property is not heritage listed and has been listed by real estate agents Colliers as a prime development site, but local music lovers hope that it could be sold as a going concern so concerts can continue.
Currently, The Tivoli has gigs booked until September, with poster printing advertising high profile acts like New Zealand’s Fat Freddy’s Drop, British punk legends The Stranglers and Beatles tribute act The Bootleg Beatles.
In the past, it has hosted big names including Bob Dylan, Powderfinger and Katy Perry.
The expression of interest period for the property ends on Thursday, March 10.
