The Royal Queensland Show, more famously known as the Ekka, is when country Queensland visits the city.
Run by The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland, the Ekka was first held in 1876 and is considered as the most popular annual event in Brisbane. The early editions of the Ekka were focused on showcasing agricultural and industrial advancements in the field of farming. Cattle and other farm animals were also exhibited during the show, and this remains true today. Animal parades, sheep dog herding contests, equestrian events, and more are on the cards again for this year.
The fair will provide rides, food, and entertainment for the whole family. The usual rides are present - Ferris wheels, giant slides, horror houses, thrill rides – and newer thrills can be had from virtual-reality experiences and bungee jumping.
Food selections will include fairy floss and dagwood dogs, burgers (or fish) and chips, and the Ekka favourite: the strawberry sundae. The Country Women’s Association will also present traditional country recipes and gourmet food for the discerning foodie.
The treat that the Ekka is renowned for is the showbags. The colourful Packaging, with visually attractive logos and designs, calls everyone to inspect and enjoy the different showbags available. The manufacturers sell their showbags at a discounted rate. The Bags can include sweets, toys or other novelty items, with manufacturers offering discounted Promotional Products for this special marketing event.
The Ekka runs from 10 to 19 August this year, with People’s Day on 15 August. Parking near the Showgrounds can be difficult during People’s Day. Fortitude Valley offers parking options and is a short stroll away from the Showgrounds. If the Exhibition Line is too crowded, visitors can also hop off at the Fortitude Valley train station as an alternative.
