Eclectic mix of venues to host Anywhere Festival performances

Fortitude Valley, Queensland, is among many Brisbane suburbs to host events as part of this year’s Anywhere Festival.

First held in 2011, the festival was established to provide opportunities to stage performances at various venues other than the traditional theatre spaces, which were in short supply.

Since its inception, audiences have seen 344 works, including a total of 279 world premiere presentations staged by local Brisbane artists.

Signs, Brochures and poster printing have been conducted to advertise this year’s 420 festival performances.

A spokesman for the organisers, Brisbane-based not-for-profit organisation Anywhere Theatre Festival Limited, said 63 different locations, including old skate rinks, rural railway stations, underground reservoirs, gaols and churches will host the performances.

He said the unique festival had this year attracted a record number of locally based independent performers, which illustrated its growing popularity.

Premier of Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Anywhere Festival is a homegrown event that has blossomed into a major success story that is now not only held in Brisbane, but also in Mackay, Parramatta in NSW, and Frankston in Victoria.

She said the 2016 programme of events in Brisbane has expanded to include the Sunshine Coast and Ipswich.

Anywhere Festival founder Paul Osuch said that new to this year’s festival, which is to be held from May 5 to 21, will be a small selection of shows in traditional theatres and a number of workshops.
