Police officer lends helping hand to lost little ones

Seven ducklings in Wauwatosa recently underwent a harrowing rescue, thanks to the help of a member of the city’s police.

The little birds had apparently

decided to take a walk across the street, and had become stuck in a storm sewer in the curb. Officer Olson arrived on the scene and set to work rescuing the ducklings. He lifted the grate and got down into the opening so he could scoop them up from the debris. He was able to lift them all to safety, and they were reunited with their worried mother.

Photos of him performing this act of kindness were posted to the Wauwatosa Police’s Facebook page, where they were viewed and liked by nearly 300 users of the social media site.

Members of the public who find a bird or other wild animal they think may be sick, injured or otherwise in need of help are encouraged to call their local Humane Society or The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to seek advice about what to do. Poster printing are used in public areas and in local veterinary centers to help let the public know more about what actions to take should they spot a wild animal they think may be in need of rescue.

The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center can be reached by calling 414-431-6204. Its webpage also contains information and a list of contacts of organizations that can lend a hand in situations like these.
