Wauwatosa learns how to help migrating birds

Migrating birds face many challenges on their journeys, and thanks to an online event, Wauwatosa households will be able to offer them a helping hand.

The Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin has joined with the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Partnership to bring the Save Our Songbirds campaign to the public. It will provide a deep dive into ways humans can help migrating birds find their way, and it is scheduled for late August.

The presentation will discuss how weather modeling, radar data, and other information can be used by those performing ecological forecasting, which can be helpful in determining when and where birds will be passing through. This information can then be utilized by city planners and others to design and set times for artificial lighting systems. Everyone will learn how light pollution is impacting birds, and tips for becoming local avian advocates in their own communities will be provided as well. Lights Out Wisconsin will also be contributing to the activity.

Online presentations make it possible for an organization to reach as many people as possible. Organizers may choose to order visual materials for an activity from a local poster printing company to distribute to anyone who requests further information.

This information session is scheduled for Wednesday, August 26 on the Zoom platform, running from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. It is part of the Mighty Migrations Series, and more details, including dates for the other installments, can be found on the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance website.
