The Armenian community in Greenfield and surrounding areas are coming together to put on their annual Armenian Fest.
The event has been a fixture in the area for over 80 years, bringing people together for food, fun, and a little education about one of Europe’s lesser-known nations.
The centrepiece of the celebration is the food. Due to its proximity to the Mediterranean, Armenian food shares a lot in common with Greek food, but features several unique dishes as well as a different array of spices from other Mediterranean nations. This year, chicken and beef kebab will be served alongside cheese and spinach burek, lahmajoun (similar to a flat bread pizza), tabouleh (a type of salad), veggie and meat sarma, and choreg (breadsticks) with hummus. The fest will have baklava and other treats as well as Armenian wine and other beverages.
On top of the impressive spread, several people will be playing Armenian music during the festivities. A booth will also be set up offering Books, Brochures, and artifacts related to Armenia. This nation has existed in one form or another for over 3,000 years, surviving where other stronger, larger nations did not. The event celebrates this long heritage and wants festival goers to take a piece of Armenia home with them in their hearts.
Armenian Fest will be held tomorrow, July 24 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm at St. John the Baptist Armenian Orthodox Church, located at 7825 W. Layton Ave. Admission to the event is free to the public. Anyone interested in more info should visit the website.
