The company just turned off its coal burners, which means that it is now running entirely on natural gas. The announcement was made by Green Bay’s Mayor Eric Genrich and executives from the paper mill who were proud to announce that the mill has now cut down its emissions to 10%. Any brochure printing that includes the company’s future plans is likely to feature this information.
The shutting down of the coal burners is part of the mill’s long-term plan to maintain the environment. Another part of the plan is opening up a new $500m facility to replace the old mill. Bryan Hollenbach, Green Packaging’s vice president stated:
“We are very, very confident we are going to be right on schedule just like we have so far. Shutting that coal fire boiler down on the exact date that we planned out a year ago, it’s pretty impressive, we’re pretty happy with that.”
The new facility started being constructed in August 2018 and it is expected to be finished in 2021. The best features of the new mill include the ability to use recycled paper to make its products and an innovative way to use and treat wastewater so that it is not dumped in the Fox River. In total, 1,000 jobs are expected to be retained when the new mill opens and an additional 200 will be made available.
