A woman from Virginia Beach is this year's Navy Spouse of the Year.
Captain Cassidy Norman's wife, Michelle, earned the honor from Armed Forces Insurance. She will go to Washington DC with other winners from around the country and from different military branches. Each has a chance to win Military Spouse of the Year. Her husband recently was deployed aboard the USS Mount Whitney as the commanding officer.
Michelle started out as Norfolk's Naval Station Spouse of the Year. Norfolk is the largest base for the Navy on the planet. After several interviews and voting processes, she won Spouse of the Year for the whole Navy.
She advocates for military families with special needs children as part of the platform that comes with her title. It is a topic that is close to her heart, as more than 20 disabilities affect her daughter Marisa.
According to Michelle, military families are constantly moving, and the moving from one school to another is especially hard for students with disabilities. Michelle expressed gratitude that her new title makes her voice heard in legislation.
During her time in Washington DC, she plans to meet with legislatures and representatives from the offices of several congressional representatives from her district who also serve on the House Committee for the armed services.
She could use Business Cards with her new title on them to network in Washington DC and in the future.
