Virginia Beach set to get a whole lot crabbier

This summer, Virginia Beach will play host to a festival where crustaceans will take pride of place.

The Mid-Atlantic Hermit Crab Challenge will offer something for the whole family. There will be the Crustacean 500 race, and a beauty contest where the crabs can strut their stuff in displays that will be judged on creativity and beauty. Owners are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and come up with something really special.

It is expected that as many as 300 hermit crabs will be on hand for the event, with some of their human companions no doubt even bringing them in from out of state to participate. The winner of the Crustacean 500 will be presented with an ‘Order of the Mercury Claw’ award. Prizes will also be given for the second and third place entries, as well as such categories as prettiest, friendliest, and shyest crabs. Stationery printers can produce award certificates for all of the categories in events such as this.

The event, which has been named as one of the wackiest summer events by TripAdvisor and the New York Daily News, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 23 on the beach at 30th street. It will start at 10:00 am and run until 2:00 pm. Those who wish to enter a crab need to register by 9:30 am in order to enter the race.
