Virginia Beach recognizes its heroes

Firefighters, dignitaries and members of the public from Virginia Beach recently came together to honor one of their own.

In a ceremony held at Kemptsville High School, Captain Ray Irizarry was presented with the Firefighter of the Year Award. This was just one of the many accolades that were bestowed during the evening. Irizarry was chosen because of his dedication to the department and making it as great as it can be. He took part in a high rise live burn exercise, assisted with the recruit academy, and his overall positive attitude helped to keep the department going strong. His colleagues noted that his efforts during the high rise fire training session helped to make sure that it ran as smoothly as possible, and he has also made a large contribution to ensuring that the academy produces recruits of the highest caliber.

The awards recognize those firefighters who go above and beyond in their chosen career, exemplifying such traits as bravery, a dedication to public service, and the ability to keep their skills well honed.
