Singing cellist to visit Virginia Beach

Cellists are not usually known as singers, but one artist is set to change that perception in an upcoming event.

BJ Griffin was born in Detroit but raised in Virginia Beach, and he is now coming back to the city for a concert. Griffin has been involved in the Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra and other groups in the community, and he performed both throughout the nation and overseas, including trips to Greece and China. He studied at James Madison University, where he majored in cello performance, music education, and the music industry. As he continued his mastery of the instrument, he began to study voice and was a soloist with Exit 245, an all-male acapella group that performed on the East Coast.

After graduating from James Madison, Griffin went to New York City and began freelancing as a cellist. He joined the faculty of Michigan’s renowned Interlochen Arts Camp, where he was a teacher and coach, as well as a performer in faculty recitals. It was at Interlochen that Griffin explored the idea of playing the cello and singing simultaneously. In 2011, at a recital of faculty composers, he made his debut as a singing cellist.

Since then, Griffin has championed different ways of expressing the art of playing the cello and singing, performing as a soloist as well as working with ensembles. Poster printing is often used to publicize events such as this.

BJ Griffin will be at the Zeiders American Dream Theater on June 18 at 7.30pm.
