Plan proceeding for proposed Virginia Beach rail extension

The City of Virginia Beach recently asked for companies who might want to design and construct an expansion for the existing light rail transit line that currently terminates in Norfolk. They would like to see it extend to the town center in Virginia Beach.

The call for letters of interest was made in October, with a close date set as November 13. In all, 13 responses from interested parties were received from companies and teams, with five others asking for more information.

The three teams that were heard from were:

• VIAS USA
• Sacyr Construction USA Orders Companies
• Dragados USA

The five groups of companies that submitted letters expressing interest were:

• SkanskBalfour Beatty, AECOM
• Lane, VHB, Burns Engineeering, L.K. Comstock National Transit, RailWorks Track Systems
• Harzog, Brasnscome, CH2M, Clark Nexsen
• Kiewit, E.V. Williams, McLean, HDR, Mass Electric Construction Company
• Parsons Construciton group, Stacky Witbeck, Inc.

Still five others informed the city that they may be interested in submitting a letter, but would need further clarification and information before doing so. These were:

• Inncer Circle Concepts, architecture
• ARUP, project and construction management
• GET Solutions, Inc., geotechnical engineering
• Infrastructure and Industrial Construction Southeast, heavy construction
• Spann and Associates, civil engineering and construction

The next phase of the proposed project will begin in January, when a request will be made to the companies to display their qualifications. For added professionalism, responses can be printed on Letterheads that have been produced by a Print company.
