Pharrell Williams summer camps over for the season

The Virginia Beach youth summer camps inspired by musician Pharrell Williams finished on July 20.

Williams, a Virginia Beach native who has become an international celebrity, set up the FOHTA (From One Hand To Another) foundation. The nonprofit plans and manages the local summer S.T.E.A.M.M. camps. The abbreviation is a variation on STEM education, with arts and motivation added to the science, technology, engineering, and math program. It hosted the camp at the town center in the city where Hampton University has a satellite campus.

Callaloo Kids illustrator Nabeeh Bilal and author Marjuan Canady were present at a Friday camp event. Both are touring to advertise their new book for children. The two also performed and taught puppeteering. It included improvisation and participation from the child audience.

According to Stephanie Walters, the program manager for FOHTA, sensory learning and the ability to be creative is essential to education. The camp had regular activities for each subject but also incorporated literature and culture. It creates a well-rounded theater opportunity. A representative of the camp added that the arts are as important as the sciences to teach..

There are a total of 24 S.T.E.A.M.M camps in five states available over the summer. Williams is an alumnus of Princess Anne High School and is constantly involved in the local community.
