Mobile vet brings pet health to rural Virginia Beach

Local pet shelters in Virginia Beach are working with 10 on Your Side to combat overcrowding during the summer.

Full animal shelters is a nationwide problem. Clear the Shelters is a national campaign that helps get animals in shelters adopted quickly. Although adoption reduces the amount of animals in shelters, spaying and neutering dogs and cats also helps. The Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals has created the Neuter Scooter program to make spaying and neutering easier for the community.

Virginia Beach SPCA veterinary technician Shannon Wilson is the coordinator for the Neuter Scooter and makes vet medicine mobile. It is a vehicle with a unique Logo Design across its front and it goes to the more rural areas of Hampton Roads to vaccinate and offer spay and neuter services.

Wilson said there is an abundance of animals that are not spayed or neutered. Growing up, she saw animals dropped off at shelters due to lack of spaying and neutering. It made her feel sad, which inspired her to work with the Neuter Scooter. Seeing people take their animals to the mobile vet, care for their pets, and make the choice to have their animals spayed or neutered is great.

The surgical procedures not only reduce the animal population but also improve the health of the animals by removing organs that can get sick. Wilson and her team have a mission to empty every shelter.
