It is time once again for the annual sales tax holiday in Virginia, and in addition to items for the new school year, those used in hurricane preparation and some appliances will be included.
Certain clothing and footwear will be tax exempt so long as the individual item is not more than $100. School supplies that are tax free will include Backpacks, composition Books, binders, and lunchboxes that cost no more than $20 each.
McLean shoppers need to be aware, however, that accessories such as wallets, purses, makeup, jewelry, sports equipment and umbrellas will still be charged the 4.3% state sales tax, as well as any other applicable taxes.
Flyer printing provides many stores with a way to help their customers keep track of what is tax free and what is not.
Parents are not the only ones who can benefit from this year’s tax holiday; on August 3, starting at 12:01 am through August 5 until 11:59 pm, residents can buy items to prepare for hurricane season, such as gas-powered chainsaws costing $350 or less and their accessories costing no more than $60. Other included items are flashlights, batteries, smoke detectors, cellphone chargers, bottled water, and first aid kits.
Those planning some big purchases, such as a portable generator for no more than $1,000 and appliances for noncommercial use that are $2,500 or less and contain a WaterSense or Energy Star label, can get them tax free as well.
