School boundary changes affect over 268 students

Fairfax County School Board (FCSB) has officially decided upon adjustments of school boundaries to address McLean High School overcrowding.

Students in the split feeder area of Colvin Run Elementary School will be realigned to attend Cooper Middle-Langley High rather than Longfellow Middle-McLean High, along with a part of Westbriar Elementary and some of the Spring Hill Elementary split feeder area. It is estimated that 78 middle school level students and 190 high school will face possible school changes.

Copper Middle will receive incoming 7th graders for the 2021-2022 school year while 8th graders will be remaining at Longfellow Middle. Both students in 7th and 8th grade will be going to Cooper Middle during the 2022-2023 school year.

Rising freshmen in the affected area will be given the option of being grandfathered in at McLean High or starting the 2021-2022 school year in Langley High. Those freshmen will have to stick to whatever their decision was through 2024-2025. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors for the school year 2021-2022 will remain at McLean High.

During the 2019-2020 school year, McLean High was 357 students over capacity while Langley High had 398 fewer than its designed capacity. Longfellow Middle had 40 fewer students than it was designed for and Copper Middle was 128 below its new planned design capacity.

The boundary adjustments and shifting of students will begin in the 2021-2022 school year. Print shops supply the many of the customized items schools use to build spirit and recognition.
