New exhibitions to open at McLean Community Center

The McLean Project for the Arts is set to open three new exhibitions in the Atrium, Emerson, and Ramp Galleries at the McLean Community Center in Virginia.

‘New Sculpture’ by Mary Walker will be displayed at the Emerson Gallery. Her pieces include wall-hung art that uses concepts from the landscape, natural science, and mechanics. The pieces will display the duality of man and nature through the use of combining painting with manmade objects such as nuts and bolts.

‘Some Assembly Desired: The Printmaker as Jeweler’ by Alice Kresse will be displayed at the Atrium Gallery. The pieces by Kresse will include monoprints and handmade jewelry. Kresse uses her background in graphic design to create multilayered, poetic monoprint pieces.

Lastly, ‘Power Poles: Sculpture’ by Alonzo Davis will be displayed in the Ramp Gallery. This exhibit includes a sculpture that is attached to the wall, suspended by strings, and is freestanding as well. The sculpture was influenced by Davis’ travels around the world and he incorporates different energies and imagery from places such as Brazil, West Africa, Haiti, the American Southwest, and the Pacific Rim into the sculpture. It is constructed from bamboo, paint, paper, wood, and LED lights.

There will be a reception for the opening this Thursday, January 12 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, while the exhibitions will be open for viewing until March 4.
