McLean school a national finalist for student newspaper award

McLean High School’s newspaper, The Highlander, is among 28 publications nationwide competing for the National Scholastic Press Association award.

A student-run, online publication, The Highlander is in the race to win the Pacemaker Award, which has recognized high school newspapers since 1927. In later years, broadcast programs, online sites, magazines, and yearbook divisions have been added. Finalists for these awards are chosen from three countries and 30 states, totaling 185 locations in all.

Gary Lundgren, coordinator and associate director of the Pacemaker competition, made the following remarks regarding the finalist announcements:

"The judging teams will now continue to study the sites named as Pacemaker finalists on a frequent basis. The Pacemaker winners will be selected shortly before they are named on April 18; so, for the 28 schools we are naming as finalists today, the competition is really just heating up."

Student participation in an award-winning school newspaper is among the information that should be included in information supplied to Print shops for résumé printing, or inclusion in a college application.

Only one other Virginia school newspapers is among the nominees, the Prince George High School’s TRNWIRED.

In Nashville, Tennessee, the Spring National High School Journalism opening ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 16, at which time the finalists will receive plaques. On April 18, at 3:30 pm winners will be announced and be presented with plaques during an awards ceremony at the convention’s closing.
