MCA board passes tax rate reduction resolution

The board of directors for the McLean Citizens Association (MCA) passed a resolution in early April, supporting a two-cent lowering of the property tax rate.

Before being passed, a debate took place regarding the wisdom of lowering the tax rate. Advocates for the reduction cited the over $400m the county and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) are anticipated to receive in relief funds through the American Rescue Plan.

According to Jim Beggs, an MCA board member, his property was assessed to be 10% higher in value this year, thereby causing a corresponding rise in his property taxes. Beggs was quoted at tysonsreporter.com as saying:

“Our teachers deserve the respect and admiration of the public, but this COVID crisis has impacted a lot of people. …I’m one of the folks that have seen a significant increase, and a little one or two penny decrease in the rate helps a little bit.”

Some members of the board were concerned about how it would look to be advocating against pay increases for employees of FCPS, and a one-time bonus for employees making up to $125,000 was included in the resolution. On May 4, an approved budget will be adopted for Fiscal Year 2022, which commences on July 1.
