As funding recently became available, the continued support for changes to McLean Central Park drawn up nine years ago have been studied and the original concept revised.
In 2013, the Concept of Central Park Development plans were drawn, and passage of a park bond in November 2020 has brought the Central Park redevelopment closure to fruition. To see if the public still favored the original plan, a study was conducted and after scrutinizing over 500 comments, it was determined that public’s wishes for the park had shifted somewhat.
The revised master plan for the 28-acre park was recently presented to the Fairfax County Park Authority. Among the comments that influenced the plan’s revision were those calling for the preservation of green space, incorporating public art, revised pickleball layouts, improving courts, and the expansion of playgrounds.
Support for an amphitheater has waned somewhat, as the new plan calls for one that is less intrusive of the natural landscape, and which will necessitate fewer mature trees being removed. In addition to a performance venue, the space will also be available for picnics, birthday parties, and other everyday uses.
Banner printing services are frequently called upon to promote events held in public parks.
Other changes include the addition of a natural meadow and the elimination of the proposed dedicated dog park.
Public comments are still being accepted and will be reviewed before a final design is approved. Comments will be accepted until April 1st at McLeanCentralPark@PublicInput.com.
