Mt. Vernon holds traceable food event
Many of those here in Alexandria will be going to Foodways: Farm to Table in the 18th Century coming in mid-August.
All day, groups may view the kitchen area and learn about food preparation. Food demonstrations will take place in the venue's 12-acre field. Guests will be exploring common dishes as enjoyed by the Washingtons, the seasonality of food, where the food came from, and some of the enclaved population's favorites.
The Icehouse will have hands-on dairying experiences such as churning butter and making ice cream. Photos of family members trying out these new skills often go to print shops to be added to family calendars and newsletters.
The greenhouse will have character interpreters explaining what was grown in Mount Vernon's gardens.
A special one-hour Gardens and Landscape tour will take place at 11:00 am, beginning at the Mansion Circle. Guests will be taken through the lower and upper gardens, learn about plants and flowers, and hear about work done by both enslaved and hired gardeners.
At 1:00 pm, guests can enjoy a Dining with the Washingtons Tour through the salt house, gardens, slave quarters, green house, smokehouse, and kitchen.
Adult general admission will be $26 and tickets for kids from ages 6 to 11 will be $13. Younger attendees will not need tickets.
Farm to Table in the 18th Century will take place from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm next weekend, August 10 and 11, at George Washington's Mount Vernon, 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.
