Annual Alexandria parade marks birth of a president

The George Washington Birthday Parade is planned and ready to take place again this month.

The intersection of Fairfax and Gibbon streets marks the starting spot of the country’s oldest and largest annual birthday parade honoring the first U.S. president. Thousands of people participate in the annual event, and many thousands more line the streets to enjoy the floats and see the dignitaries that take part in the day.

Numerous awards are given away to participants in a variety of categories, and there is still time for businesses and organizations to print up their banners and register for the parade. A registration form and information about the route and line-up time are available on the parade website.

This year’s parade celebrates the 286th anniversary of the birth of President Washington. Many local businesses are planning special events and festivities, including an 18th-Century ball, to coincide with the parade.

The parade will march through Old Town Alexandria on February 19 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. There is no charge for the shuttle bus service from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm on the day of the event, and the King Street Trolley is free to use and will be in operation throughout the day. Public parking can be found next to the Eisenhower Avenue Metro States.

Any changes to the parade route or time will be announced on the events hotline. Call (703) 829-6640 at any time to hear information relating to inclement weather or other potential delays.
