The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently published 2019’s accountability ratings, which rate schools in the state according to the academic performances of its students since the start of last year’s school calendar. Schools from the Lake Houston area districts such as Humble, Crosby and Huffman performed well.
Humble ISD (Independent School District) scored 88 on this year’s review, which gives it a letter grade of ‘B’. A pair of elementary schools - Whispering Pines Elementary and Jack M. Fields Sr. Elementary - both received an ‘F’. Four other schools (Lakeland Elementary, River Pines Elementary, Northbelt Elementary and Humble Middle School) received a D. Community members who wish to help these schools increase their performance can give donations such as promotional Pens.
The overall score was propped up by the high number of schools that received an ‘A’. Some of these schools were Branch Elementary, Quest Early College High School, Shadow Forest Elementary, Kingwood High School, and Bear Branch Elementary.
Elizabeth Fagen, Humble ISD’s Superintendent, stated that officials are using this information to provide support to the schools where more bespoke attention and help with their curriculums are needed.
According to her though, TEA’s rating system should not be the solemeasure of a school’s success. Fagen also pointed out:
“The ratings system is largely based on STAAR tests, which educational experts, parents, and the media have all questioned as a valid measure of student success. The state system changes often, making it difficult to make comparisons over time.”
Humble ISD was exempt from 2018’s ratings because of Hurricane Harvey.
