Humble ISD backs phased return to school

Last Monday, a four-hour meeting was held between board members, parents, and teachers to decide on what would be the best way to educate students for the 2020-21 academic year.

The one thing that was clear after the meeting was, even though they all want what is best for the students, they have different views on how this can be achieved.

The Humble ISD school board eventually voted six to one in favor of beginning online classes this Tuesday, August 11. In-person education will be implemented in phases starting on August 17, and students with special needs will get priority. The plan shows that students in middle and high school will be attending classes up to three times a week. Students in elementary schools will be returning to their usual schedules. Promotional Pens can be included in back-to-school offers.

The board’s president, Robert Sitton, said:

“We, the board and (Superintendent) Fagen have received hundreds of emails, phone calls over the past few weeks. Some have been very cordial, some not so much. Some want all kids in school on day one, some don’t feel we should continue until much later.”

This was the first board meeting held since February and it was streamed live on TexanLive.com. One board member, Nancy Morrison, attended via weblink while the rest were there in person. The board meeting was held so that the schools could make their own decisions after getting conflicting guidelines from state and local officials.
