Houston class to train up new food foragers

Nature provides a bounty even in urban areas, and a Houston workshop will help those who would like to take advantage of this to get started at foraging.

Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen, Ph. D, is a subject matter expert when it comes to edible flora, and he will be sharing his knowledge with attendees in the Foraging Houston class. The goal is for those who take part to develop a greater appreciation for “weeds” and the flavors they offer. Tickets are $25 each.

The session is scheduled for the Japhet Transition Community, and participants will learn how to properly identify plants so they can safely harvest them. Tips for their culinary use will be shared, and everyone will be taught how the species that grow in a particular location can provide clues to its soil health. More information about the activity will be distributed upon registration.

More people are becoming interested in sustainable living, where foraging for wild plants can play a role. A brochure printing company will be able to prepare learning materials that may be helpful to those just getting started at foraging for their food.

This introduction to the joys and benefits of foraging for edible plants will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 2. The venue can be found at 4466 Billy Street in Houston.
