Houston asked to help migrating birds

Spring’s arrival means millions of birds are heading to the north, and Houston residents and businesses have been asked to join others all across the state in helping them make the trip safely.

A variety of ornithological and conservation groups have come together to ask the public to join in with the Take the Lights Out Texas pledge, which will make it easier for the tired birds flying to their northern homes to navigate, as many fly at night. The initiative will run throughout the spring, and it is easy to take part.

To get involved in the program, homeowners and businesses have been asked to turn off all non-essential lighting. This will help to keep birds from crashing into brightly lit buildings, with the bonus of reducing energy costs. Everyone can take part, and it may even provide an opportunity to teach kids about the importance of environmental stewardship.

Spreading the world to as many as possible about an initiative is often a big part of its success. A poster printing company will be pleased to help, and can prepare a wide variety of styles of these marketing tools.

This chance to do a good turn for feathered friends passing through Houston is up and running, and people are asked to keep their lighting reduced until June 15th. Anyone who is interested in learning more about this activity can do so on the Discovery Green website.
