Traveling exhibit of British art coming to Memphis

The exhibition ‘Hail, Britannia! Six Centuries of British Art from the Berger Collection’ will be on display at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens as of the end of this month.

The traveling exhibit was created by the Denver Art Museum with help from the Berger Collection Educational Trust. There will be 50 works on display, representing British art from medieval times up to the 20th Century. Some of the artists who are included in the exhibition are Hans Holbein the Younger, Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, and Angelica Kauffman.

There are also a couple of events related to the exhibition taking place. On January 25, Kathleen Stuart will be giving a lecture entitled ‘Treasure of British Art’ in which she will provide information on where the paintings were found and some secrets behind their creation. The Munch and Learn lecture on February 4 will be about ‘Music and the Pastoral: Britain in the Long Eighteenth Century’, and it will be delivered by Dr. Vanessa Rogers. Both of these are free with admission.

Major art exhibitions often attract those who work for Memphis graphics and printing companies, since seeing the work of others can inspire them in their projects.

‘Hail, Britannia’ will be showing at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens from January 25 until April 19. The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday and admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $3 for children between 7 and 17.
