Memphis tour to visit some of its oldest trees

Many trees keep on living long after the person who planted them has come and gone. Some of those that grow in Memphis’s Elmwood Cemetery have been there for over 300 years, and an upcoming our will pay them a visit.

The site harks back to the days when a cemetery was seen as a gathering place for individuals and families to celebrate the life of their loved ones , and to help make it a peaceful spot, more than 1,400 trees were planted throughout the years. Many are already marked with a tag that gives their species and cultivar, and the guided tour will offer even more information that both historians and horticulturalists may find interesting.

The group will be making several stops on the walk, and some of these will be at the site’s oldest trees, which are often called “witness trees”. The activity is scheduled to take about 90 minutes, and as there will be a lot of walking, sturdy and comfortable shoes are recommended.

Taking part in this sort of activity can offer a starting point in an investigation of a community’s human and natural history. Booklets that provide further details can be prepared by a brochure printing company, and can be given to each ticket holder for this function.

Elmwood Cemetery, which can be found at 824 on South Dudley Street, is set to welcome this tour for historical trekkers on November 9. The registration fee is $20.
