Memphis presentation to introduce public to carnivorous plants

Carnivorous plants come in many shapes and sizes, from the tiny bladderworts and sundews, all the way up to big pitcher plants. A Memphis presentation will give a sneak peek into their ecology, and it will be led by a subject matter expert.

Auburn University’s Patrick Thompson will be exploring the collection of carnivorous plants housed at the Donald E. Davis Arboretum, and he will discuss why they are often at risk. The focus will be on the pitcher plants that can be found in Alabama’s long leaf pine forests, but other species will be included as well.

Thompson will explore pitcher plants and why those found in Alabama may be at risk due to deforestation and an interruption in forests’ natural fire renewal cycle. Other species such as sundews, Venus flytraps, and bladderworts will be included in the talk, and the presenter will also explain what the public can do to help ensure the long-term survival of these unusual plants.

The Memphis Botanic Garden will be hosting this presentation, and it will open with a meet and greet with refreshments. Many people are fascinated by these plants, and a poster printing company can prepare materials that let them know this sort of learning experience is on offer.

This opportunity to learn more about these green meat-eaters will be held on August 4. It is an initiative of the Memphis Botanic Garden, and it will be taking place at its location at 750 Cherry Road.
