What's Happening in Memphis, TN…

Memphis initiative to help raise new crop of readers

Students in Memphis’s Cherokee Elementary School will soon be offered an opportunity that can help them to take the first step towards a lifelong love of reading. The public has been asked to get behind this initiative by signing up to read to a child.

To help build the excitement among the students who will be taking part in this year’s activity, there will be lots of lights, decorations, and other festive touches. According to its organizers, the main goal of the morning is to get kids ‘hooked on reading’, and community support to this initiative is greatly appreciated.

Those who volunteer to take part in the day will be asked to bring along a new book that they have placed in a gift bag. They will be paired with a student and will read the book to them, and at the end of the session, the boy or girl will get to keep the book so they can read it on their own whenever they like.

Other than the price of the book and gift bag, there is no cost to participate in this event. Festive banners that thank the community for their support of an event like this can be designed by a local banner printing business.

The ‘Santa’s Helpers’ will be reading to the students at Cherokee Elementary school on December 7. More details can be obtained by contacting burnetttm@scsk12.org.
