The Memphis RiverArtsFest is a celebration of the art and music of the Mid-South that takes place downtown each year in the South Main Arts District, and a date has already been set for the 2018 event.
Intended to promote appreciation and support for the arts, the festival attracts around 30,000 visitors annually, who come to experience hands-on art projects for kids, juried art shows, concerts, street performances, and food.
Each year, a local artist is chosen to design a commemorative poster for the event. Prints of the current and previous years’ Posters are available for purchase at various stores in the Memphis Arts District, as well as at the festival’s merchandise booth. There is also an artists’ market, where visitors can purchase items such as jewelry, woodworking, paintings, glassworks, ceramics, and more. Banners proclaim the locations of activity stations, and, although the information is available online, Brochures are invaluable to have in hand for maps and attraction schedules.
The festival began in 1984 as Arts in the Park. It has gone through several permutations on its way to becoming the current RiverArtsFest, including receiving tax-exempt art services organization status. In addition to funding the next year’s event, proceeds from the festival are reinvested into the community in the form of art scholarships, art master classes held free of charge for local students, funding for visual arts projects, and free festival tickets for Art in the Making program participants.
RiverArtsFest 2018 will take place from October 26-28.
