According to Terry Blue, the CEO and President of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, an application has been submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration that will see Memphis International change its name to Frederick W. Smith International Airport. The change will be a tribute to the deceased FedEx founder.
At a recent meeting for the Airport Authority Board of Commissioners, Blue stated:
“We are starting to see the new airport name populate in various FAA databases, though I do not yet have confirmation from the FAA, and it’s fairly possible that we would see the new name being reflected in various aeronautical charts, flights plans and things along those lines as soon as mid-January."
According to Blue, the airport's team and employees are still working on updated branding and logos related to the rebranding. More details will be shared early in 2026. MEM, the airport's recognized three-letter location identification, will not change. A change of name would be a good reason for a brand to enlist Logo Design services.
Frederick Wallace Smith made his name as an investor and business tycoon. The largest express shipping corporation in the world, FedEx Corporation, was founded by him in 1973 and is headquartered in Memphis. He died at 80 in the summer of 2025.
