Memphis activity to share secrets of seed saving
Whether it is to preserve heritage cultivars, breed a special variety, or just to be thrifty, seed saving offers lots of advantages, and a Memphis workshop will teach the basics of the practice.
There is always lots to do at Memphis Botanic Garden, and it has organized a Herbal Work Study for early January that will introduce some best practices when it comes to seed saving. It will be hands-on learning, with the registrants helping to clean seeds for future use.
The facilitator of the activity will teach the group how to clean and prepare seeds for storage, including how to package them to keep out dampness, bacteria, and mold. There will also be a discussion of herbs, their cultivation, and their uses. A digital handout has been prepared for distribution that will give more details and tips for the savers, as well as recipes and information about herbs.
Many gardeners like learning new skills and workshops give them an opportunity to do so while meeting others who share their interest. Providing everyone with small, printed envelopes to save their seeds in will help encourage them to get started at saving, and they may be ordered from stationery printers
