Celebration will offer fun for the whole family

The 3rd annual Juneteenth Family Fun Festival will soon be taking place in nearby Horn Lake.

Hosted by the Desoto County African-American History Symposium, the event will feature food of all kinds of items for purchase, and arts and crafts vendors will be selling items such as jewelry, clothing, ceramics, and paintings.

A Corvette car show will be displaying vintage vehicles, and the owners of the top three cars will be given prizes. There will also be a variety of musical performers of blues, gospel, country, and R&B music. Among the performances at this year's festival will be a Greek Step Show from area sororities and fraternities.

For the kids, there will be an assortment of activities including face painting, a petting zoo, and a balloon bounce.

Juneteenth is a celebration that was begun in Texas in 1865 to commemorate the ending of slavery. Observances are now held all over the world each year.

This event will likely attract visitors from as far away as Memphis. Organizers may have invested in services such as poster printing to let the community know about this celebration.

The Juneteenth Family Fun Festival will be held at Latimer Lakes Park in Horn Lake on June 13. Admission is free. To get the most recent information about the festival, contact Mike Smith at 901-481-3968.
