Warwick landmark to receive a facelift

A well known Warwick landmark will soon be getting a facelift, thanks to a grant from The Rhode Island Foundation.

The organization is celebrating its 100th anniversary, and to help mark the occasion, it has provided grants to several communities across the state with Warwick being one of them. The $5,620 will be going to the Rocky Point Foundation, which plans on using it to restore the Rocky Point arch.

The 60-foot tall structure, which started out its life as part of the World’s Fair that was held in Flushing in 1964-1965, made its way to the city where it was installed at Rocky Point. The property used to be the site of an amusement park, but the state took over the 120-acre site and it is now being converted into a public green space with trails for hiking, biking and more.

Warwick Mayor Avedisian remarked that Rocky Point means a lot to the community, as well as the rest of the state. Images of landmarks such as this can be used by postcard printing companies on the items they produce to help promote the area.

In addition to the grant provided to restore the arch, The Rhode Island Foundation also contributed a $12,300 grant to the Warwick Public Library, which plans on using it to set up a home book delivery system.
