Warwick hospital welcomes a visit from Dr. Patch Adams

Many people know of the character ‘Patch Adams’ from the film starring Robin Williams, but the patients and staff at Warwick’s Kent Hospital recently had a chance to meet the person behind the film.

The real Dr. Adams, who is also a social activist, author, and clown, paid a visit to the facility’s palliative care and oncology units for a few hours before he went on to a speaking engagement at the University of Rhode Island Honors program.

While at the hospital, he met with the members of the staff, including those in the URI Pharmacology program and Nursing students, as well as the staff and administration of the facility. Photos taken of him during his time there can be used by a printer to create Holiday Cards for the hospital that they can send out to their supporters, as well as the public and other stakeholders.

Patch Adams founded the Gesundheit Institute for Holistic Medicine, which engages in health care and other social projects around the world. He also organizes yearly trips to different communities and health care centers all over the world with a team of volunteer “clowns”, who work together to bring some brightness to the day for those who are ill and can use some cheering up.

Anyone who would like to find out more or volunteer themselves is invited to visit the Patch Adams website for more information.
